Federer Wins His Fifth US Open Title

Roger Federer is back with a bang after a polished performance put paid to the challenge of Andy Murray in straight sets 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 giving him his fifth straight US Open title.

After losing his world number one ranking to long time number two Nadal there were questions as to whether this was a player on the way out but Federer has answered those questions in the best way possible firstly by winning a medal at the Olympics and now by winning another grand slam which puts some gloss on his year.

After reaching his first grand slam final with a brilliant display against Nadal in the semi Murray played his part in this final with some excellent shots but Federer was a formidable opponent on the day and proved too strong for Murray to live with although his time will no doubt come in the not too distant future now he has closed the gap on the top three of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.

In the Women's singles Serena Williams won her third US Open beating Serb and number two seed Jelena Jankovich 6-4, 7-5 a victory which also gives her the World number one ranking.
