The second week of Wimbledon got underway and provided without doubt the most memorable day of the tournament so far with an epic encounter between Andy Murray and Frenchman Richard Gasquet that ran into 5 sets and lasted for 3 hours and 57 minutes.
Murray took a long time to get going as Gasquet won the first two sets with relative ease however the third set was key and was tightly contested with Murray winning it eventually courtesy of a tie break.
That gave the Scot the momentum to push on and even before he clinched the third set you got the feeling it could go all the way to five sets with Murray improving more and more the longer the game went on.
The atmosphere on centre court was incredible with 15,000 people in rapidly fading light willing Murray on to victory at every available opportunity as they and the player himself must have realised the outcome was close to being suspended to be concluded the following day if the climax had not arrived in the nick of time.
Murray took the match 5-7, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, 6-4 and can now look forward to a breather before an exciting match in prospect against Rafael Nadal in the quarter final.
